How to Care for Box Braids: Tips to Keep Them Fresh Longer

Why Box Braid Care Matters

Box braids are a beautiful, protective style — but keeping them looking fresh requires a little routine maintenance. With the right care, your braids can last 6–8 weeks without frizz, buildup, or breakage.

1. Moisturize Your Scalp Regularly

A dry scalp is the #1 enemy of healthy braids. Use a lightweight oil or scalp spray every 2–3 days to keep your scalp hydrated. Part your braids and apply directly to the roots.

2. Wash Your Braids (Yes, Really)

You can — and should — wash your braids every 2–3 weeks. Dilute a gentle shampoo with water in a spray bottle, apply to your scalp, and rinse thoroughly. Follow with a light conditioner on the lengths.

3. Protect Your Braids at Night

Always sleep with a satin or silk scarf or bonnet. This reduces friction, prevents frizz, and extends the life of your style significantly.

4. Tame Frizz and Flyaways

As your braids age, frizz is inevitable. Use a small amount of edge control gel to smooth down baby hairs and flyaways around your hairline for a polished look.

5. Don't Leave Them In Too Long

Braids left in longer than 8 weeks can cause matting and breakage. When it's time to take them down, be patient and use a detangling spray to ease the process.
